Ancient Gharapjhong Fort is deteriorating into rubble

Due to neglect, Mustang’s old Gharpajhong Fort has been reduced to rubble. The buildings that comprise the fort have begun to deteriorate and turn to dust. The mud fort, which is situated in Gharapjhong rural municipality-5, Jomsom, was constructed in the seventh century AD. A historical landmark in Mustang is the Garavjong fort in Thini, which was the capital of the ancient kingdom known as “She-Riv” prior to the arrival of Buddhist tradition. The Mustang district’s historical records state that King Thokerchen once ruled the kingdom from the fort. The grounds of the fort contain the remains of houses and other structures. Human habitation is reported to have existed here.

The location is currently occupied only by the remnants of mud homes’ walls. It is possible to educate the next generation about the area’s history and draw tourists if the deteriorated buildings can be kept intact. From Thinikhola, which can be reached by car in five minutes from Thini village, Gharapjhong is a ten-minute climb. At Gharapjhong Fort, the residents have also built a little Buddhist temple. According to the chairman of the Gharapjhong Rural Municipality, one million rupees has been set aside to create a master plan for the preservation of Gharapjhong Fort.
