Nepal to Modernize Tax and Income Policies to Empower Homegrown Tech and Gaming Developers
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has announced that necessary policy reforms, regulatory adjustments, and systemic improvements will be enacted to nurture an environment capable of producing global unicorn companies from within Nepal’s growing information technology (IT) and game development sectors. In a social media post shared on Saturday, Prime Minister Shah highlighted the international success of Nepali developers who created globally popular gaming applications like Ludo (nearly 200 million downloads) and Callbreak (over 150 million downloads). Acknowledging the enthusiasm of young developers across the country, he confirmed that the government has initiated ground-level engagements to address industry challenges, simplify operational processes, and formally advance game development as a recognized industry. Emphasizing the strong current performance of Nepali IT product exports, PM Shah outlined plans to streamline international income regulations, tax frameworks, earnings repatriation, and reinvestment mechanisms in collaboration with Nepal Rastra Bank and the Ministry of Finance. Furthermore, the government intends to invest directly in the broader tech ecosystem through game jams, hackathons, startup events, and regular industry dialogues to comprehensively support innovation, foster digital exports, and position Nepali businesses to scale successfully in global markets.
