Gagan Thapa Takes Charge of Nepali Congress

Gagan Kumar Thapa has been elected president of the Nepali Congress at the party’s 15th general convention, securing 6,584 votes against his rival Shyam Krishna Khadgi, who received 375 votes. Of the 7,013 votes cast, 54 were declared invalid.

Thapa’s political career began during his school years when he participated in the 2046 people’s movement. He later rose through the ranks of the Nepal Student Union, serving in several leadership positions and becoming active in pro-democracy movements.

He entered national politics through the Constituent Assembly in 2008 and was elected to Parliament from Kathmandu-4 in 2013. He also served as health minister in 2016 and became Nepali Congress general secretary at the party’s 14th general convention.

His election as party president marks another milestone in a political career spanning student activism, parliamentary service and party leadership.
