Comprehensive Provincial Report Highlights Severe Agricultural and Structural Damage After August Floods

The Bagmati provincial government has announced plans to disburse twenty-five million rupees in grants to twelve local units affected by the devastating August 26 Bhotekoshi floods while formally appealing to the federal government for an additional one billion rupees to spearhead comprehensive reconstruction efforts across the disaster-hit region. According to an integrated preliminary assessment report compiled by a seventeen-member committee coordinated by Ministry of Internal Affairs, Law and Cooperatives secretary Mahesh Bhattarai and submitted to Chief Minister Kiran Thapa Magar, the catastrophe resulted in a staggering human toll with 1,455 recorded fatalities, 5,285 missing individuals, and 344 injured people receiving ongoing hospital treatment. The floods wreaked widespread havoc on local infrastructure, destroying 2,300 private homes, partially damaging 269 others, and displacing over 2,300 families, leaving 1,085 individuals sheltered in temporary camps while hundreds of orphaned or separated children and senior citizens reside in holding centers. Public infrastructure suffered immense blows, with thirty-four motorable bridges, fifty-one suspension footbridges, 3.5 kilometers of blacktopped roads, and fourteen government buildings ruined, bringing total physical damage to an estimated 5.69 billion rupees. Educational and healthcare institutions were severely crippled as thirty-five school buildings, 317 classrooms across twelve schools, and thirteen health facilities were destroyed, disrupting schooling for over 9,248 students and cutting off vital medical access for thousands. Furthermore, basic municipal utilities were severely impaired, with fifty-five drinking-water projects and forty-four irrigation canals damaged, compounding the crisis for local residents. Economic losses mounted significantly as approximately 300 cottage and small industries, sixty-seven retail shops, and thirty warehouses sustained heavy damage exceeding 2.97 billion rupees in losses, rendering over 1,700 workers jobless. Agricultural and livestock sectors also experienced massive setbacks, with 973 hectares of farmland affected, crops destroyed across 471 hectares, and the loss of 702 large livestock, 2,123 small livestock, and 134,000 poultry birds, resulting in an estimated 285.9 million rupees in agricultural damages. While provincial authorities immediately launched active search and rescue operations, medical aid distribution, shelter management, and interim communication restoration, the newly submitted assessment report strongly recommends verifying technical damage data, creating an integrated rebuilding roadmap, prioritizing resource mobilization, and ensuring long-term shelter and basic services for all displaced citizens as recovery efforts commence across the affected Lhende-Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river basin. To help provide visual context on the disaster and recovery efforts, the videos above offer further documentation regarding the Bhotekoshi flood impact.
