Khanal Calls For Unity Among Nepal’s Communist Forces
Former Nepalese Prime Minister and senior Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leader Jhala Nath Khanal has launched a new political initiative, the ‘Socialist Awakening Campaign’ (Samajbadi Jagaran Abhiyan), after exiting the party.
Announcing the campaign at a press conference in Kathmandu on Monday, Khanal said it aims to reorganise Nepal’s communist movement along ideological and political lines and lay the groundwork for unity among various communist groups.
A proposal adopted at a meeting chaired by Khanal on Saturday called for a review of the communist movement’s past achievements, weaknesses and challenges, followed by organisational restructuring and integration based on a “revolutionary” ideological and political course.
Khanal said the campaign would work towards bringing together various revolutionary communist forces to form a unified revolutionary communist party. Several leaders who previously left the then CPN (Maoist Centre), including Haribol Gajurel, have also backed the initiative.
