Modern Surveillance and Community Partnerships Target Growing Border Security Challenges
Facing escalating security challenges along Nepal’s open international frontier, the Koshi Province Police has advocated for the urgent deployment of tech-based surveillance, including CCTV cameras and detector machines, to strengthen monitoring and curb illegal activities. Presenting a paper on regional security concerns in Biratnagar, Senior Superintendent of Police Yogendra Singh Thapa highlighted that the porous border severely complicates crime control, particularly when compounded by resource constraints and a shortage of skilled investigative personnel. Beyond border monitoring, authorities identified drug trafficking, economic crime, cybercrime, and religious or cultural disputes as pressing concerns. Police also emphasized the rising threat of online misinformation, false content, and hate speech, which risk destabilizing social harmony and undermining government initiatives. Key infrastructure developments, including projects under the Nepal Oil Corporation and local hydropower sector, were similarly cited as potential targets for disruption. To address these evolving risks, Koshi Police plans to pivot away from relying solely on traditional policing toward a modern strategy combining intelligence upgrades, inter-agency coordination, information technology, and strong community engagement through initiatives like the ‘Mothers Against Addiction’ campaign.
