Joint Nepal-Japan Emergency Project Begins to Restore Flood-Damaged Sindhuli Highway
The project targets Section Four of the 160-kilometer highway, which suffered extensive damage in September 2024 after heavy rainfall washed away more than 10 kilometers of the road. This disruption severely impacted local trade, transportation, and economic activities. Funded by a Japanese grant assistance of 2.8 billion yen—equivalent to roughly 2.3 billion rupees—the project will be executed by the Shimizu Corporation. The comprehensive plan includes rebuilding vulnerable sections, widening the road, and implementing advanced disaster-resilience and traffic safety measures.
Top officials, including Nepal’s Transport Secretary Gopal Prasad Sigdel and Japanese Ambassador Maeda Toru, attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Secretary Sigdel praised Japan as a trusted development partner, noting that the timely restoration of this highway is a matter of national importance. He added that the upgraded route will serve as a future model for resilient infrastructure across Nepal.
