Renowned Nepali sarod maestro Sudarshan Rajopadhyay has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Kalakshetram’ title in Pune, India, recognizing his outstanding contributions to music and cultural promotion. The distinguished award was presented to Rajopadhyay during Bharat Utsav 2026, a week-long cultural festival organized recently by the Akhil Lokkala Cultural Organization in Maharashtra’s cultural hub.

The grand event, which ran from May 16 to 22, featured vibrant performances from over 3,500 artists across various Indian states, showcasing iconic classical and folk art forms like Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. Highlighting his international standing, Rajopadhyay was invited to serve as a jury member for the festival, where he was subsequently feted with the Kalakshetram honour for his artistic brilliance.

Rajopadhyay has long been a pivotal figure in promoting Nepali art and culture on global platforms. This latest accolade adds to a long list of prior Indian honours, including the Surtaal International Honor Award 2025, the Vividhta Mein Ekta National Award 2020, and the title of ‘Sangeetmanjari’ from the government of West Bengal. He has also been recognized at home, winning first prize in Radio Nepal’s 2002 music competition, alongside receiving the Shastra Samman and the Save the Nation Award.

Beyond his masterful command of the sarod, Rajopadhyay is a prolific recording artist. His diverse discography spans celebrated Nepali works like Palpal and Tyo Raat, Nepal Bhasa compositions including Nasala and Chhagu Matina, and acclaimed classical albums such as One Day Ragas and Soulful Music for Meditation. This latest recognition in Pune further solidifies his legacy as a cross-border cultural ambassador.
