40 MW Supplied via India Marks Energy Diplomacy Milestone

In a landmark move, Nepal began its first-ever power exports to Bangladesh, delivering 40 megawatts (MW) via India’s power grid—an achievement that strengthens Nepal’s position in regional energy markets.
The export is part of a tripartite agreement among Nepal Electricity Authority, Bangladesh’s Power Development Board, and India’s NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam, signed in 2024. In addition, Nepal is exporting 80 MW to India’s Bihar state. Nepal presently generates over 3,000 MW (95% hydroelectric), and new infrastructure investments aim to expand export capacity further.
This development is especially significant for Nepali media: it marks the country’s transition from energy importer to exporter. For Bangladesh and regional media, it shows how cooperation in energy can deepen ties and reduce deficits. For Indian media, it reaffirms India’s role as a grid hub and regional energy enabler.
